Want to stay safe on the road? Following these five basic truckers’ safety tips can be an important first step to keeping yourself – and other motorists – out of harm’s way on the road.

1. Maintain Your Vehicle Properly
Many accidents are caused by vehicle malfunctions. That’s why it’s essential to make certain that your truck is in excellent operating condition prior to beginning a journey and taking care to ensure that it stays that way throughout the time you are on the road. This involves servicing the engine per the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring the tires are properly inflated and in good condition, keeping all fluids at proper levels, and performing other important maintenance tasks on a regular basis.

2. Get Plenty of Rest to Stay Alert
There are restrictions on the number of hours that a driver can operate a vehicle each day for a reason. Getting a sufficient amount of rest is a key safety tip that every driver should follow. In order to safely operate a truck, it’s necessary to be fully alert at all times. Truckers who try to operate vehicles without enough sleep put themselves and others in danger unnecessarily and can pose a significant road hazard. Never forget that taking care of yourself is just as important as keeping your vehicle in proper working order.
3. Be Mindful of Blind Spots
Every truck has blind spots, which are areas of the road that are not visible in a vehicle’s side and rear view mirrors. When changing lanes and turning, it’s essential for truck drivers to be mindful that there is always a possibility that there is a vehicle or other object in the lane that is not readily detectable in any of the mirrors. To avoid problems associated with blind spots, drivers should always utilize traffic signals and stay mindful of their surroundings at all times instead of relying on what they are able to see before moving from one lane to another.

4. Maintain Sufficient Distance Between Vehicles
No matter what type of vehicle you are operating, keeping your vehicle a safe distance behind the one in front of you is one of the most basic and important safety tips that needs to be followed. Since large trucks tend to take more time to stop than smaller vehicles, the amount of space necessary to safely operate this type of vehicle is greater than that for smaller automobiles. Drivers need to be aware of how their vehicles respond to stopping and keep plenty of room between their vehicles and other automobiles on the road to minimize the possibility of accidents that could result from insufficient space for braking in all types of situations.

5. Obey the Rules of the Road
Truckers are not excluded from following speed limits, seat belt laws, or any of the other driving safety rules of the road that were put into place to keep all motorists as safe as possible. It’s important for truck drivers to observe nationwide driving regulations, as well as state-specific laws that apply in the areas where they are traveling. Failure to observe applicable laws can lead to significant financial fines as well as resulting in an increased risk of traffic accidents.
